Intervista a Tanit Phoenix

Per me andrà sempre meglio.

Partirà a maggio negli Stati Uniti.

TP: Non ho mai avuto modo d'incontrarlo.

Death Race 2 is actually a prequel. It deals with the creation of the original Frankenstein, the guy that we saw dying right at the start of the first movie. How would you describe the general mood and look of the movie and his connection with Mr. Anderson's work?
Well, there are differences with the first one, expecially between actors and their relations. In the second movie there are a lot of action scenes, a lot of fast paced driving scenes, explosions..and then there's a love story between myself and the lead actor.
What can you say us about your character? I know that you are an ex military sniper who is sent to jail for killing a superior officer and that you are going to be Carl Lucas'female navigator. What else can you say?
At the beginning i had the audition for another role, and not for Kathrina Banks'part, but then the director combined this two roles and created this new person. She's been sent to jail because she killed this officer, but she killed him because this superior did something wrong. They turned her out of military because she said what he did and they didn't believe her. She believes in standing up for the smallest person, she believes in doing the right thing. When she's in jail, she discover to share the same kind of character with Luke Goss character. Watching him and how he helps some of the other prisoners that can't fight she understand that he's not just a prisoner or an arrogant guy, there's something more about him and Katrina stars feeling something more for him. They put her in the car and she navigates this crazy driving scenes. And they fall in love. There's something very real about this two people. Something that didn't show up in the first movie.
Speaking about action sequences, did you have to make a particular training for this movie filled up with action and car chasing and all this kind of stuff?
I am trained in the art of Muhai Thai, so all the action packed scenes where i'm smacking and crack some of these prison convicts, it's all me! My father was a car racer, so i'm used to drive very fast car. In your resume, you have a pretty huge modelling career and we've seen pictures of you on various popular magazines: Cosmopolitan, GQ, Maxim and so on. You are a remarkable example of feminine beauty. How have you combined your indisputable beauty with the badass qualities of Kathrina Banks? Recently, we've seen many tough characters plausibly perfomed by beatuful actresses: Uma Thurman in Kill Bill, Zoe Saldana in Avatar, Rose McGowan in Planet Terror. Do you think that beauty is the new badass?
Thank you for the compliments and yes, i do think that beauty is the new badass (risate, ndr)! It's easy for women to be sexy, but to be sexy and so badass it's another thing. I grew up with a lot of boys in my family and i had some "fighting competitions" (risate, ndr), i used to take care of myself. That's a good training to be prepared in working with badass man! In the future when i do play some other interesting character i'm gonna find the darkest side, the more disturbed part of being a badass.
You've worked with some really cool actors in Death Race 2. Danny "Machete" Trejo, Sean Bean, Luke Gross and Ving Rhames. How was life on set, with such a bunch of action movie icons?
Danny and i are extremely close, we become solid good friends in South Africa, he taked good care of me and when i had bad situations he gave me some precious advice. Sean bean is one of my favourite actors. I have one special scene with Sean that wasn't originally in the script and he's simply incredile. Ving Rhames...we have one scene togheter and we didn't spend a lot of time togheter. And Luke...he's an incredible person, he was very kind and compassionate. Regarding our love scene he wanted to make sure that i was completely confortable, about what i wanted or do not wanted to be shoot. I had a very good time with this amazing person.
We are living a high octane madness. Universal Picture knows it well, and the success of the Fast and Furious franchise is here to underline this clear statement. This Death Race sequel in born as a direct-to-video product in the hugely successful line of DVD Originals from Universal Studios Home Entertainment Productions that already brought us the amazing Smokin'Aces 2: Assassin's Ball, Scorpion King 2 and many others. The budget isn't huge, nevertheless it seems stylisctically very similar to his predecessor, that had a budget three times bigger. So, would you say that director Role Reiné did a pretty job, although the relatively little amount of money available?
It's the same if not better than the first. The first one had a higher budget beacuse they had to build all the set and everything and the start up costs a lot of money. And we shot the movie in South Africa and everything cost less in this country. You will see all the action, all the explosions and all the elements of the first movie and this special relation between the character that you didn't have in the first one. I am sorry that we can't see it on the big screen because it really deserved that.
You are South African. Recently your country has raised the bar of his fame. And i'm not speaking about Football World Cup. I'm talking about movies. Clint Eastwood and his Invictus, but, especially, Neill Blomkamp and his brilliant District 9. What's your opionion about South African film industry?
The world knows South Africa especially through politics. We went through a period of apartheid that focused attention of the world and a lot of nation turned their back to South Africa until the election of Mandela. And now we have another african president after him. People are opening their heart toward South Africa. The movies that came from my country where based on politics, racism, but now i am quite impressed by this, by how south african filmmakers are stepping outside of the boxes with this wild stories. We have french films, german films, italian films and now south africa is jumping on this wagon. District 9 was a six minute piece on youtube. Peter Jackson saw it and said "hey this is an interesting story" and he decided to put the budget in and get the film made. But the storyline was written so beatifully and i think that in the next years we'll have an Oscar winner. I think that's going better and better. What about your future? We know that you have the lead role in HBO's Femme Fatales.....
Femme Fatal is an anthology in which every episode tells a different story. I introduce the show and i'm in the show. In every episode i play a different character and that's really exciteing. I lead the audience in the direction of who of these woman become the femme fatale. In the 13th episode you will discover why i'm following these women. And i am not gonna tell you why! It's a very sexy, dangerous and exciting serie. It will open in may in USA. I also had an offer for another film in London, but i can't tell what it is and i am so excited about it. One last question: what can you say us about Paul W.S.Anderson involvement on Death Race 2? He's a pretty busy guy, so i was wondering how he managed his participation on this project.
I never met him. He was on set a couple of times, but he wrote a very good story, even better than the first.
